Riesling

Name of varietal: Riesling

Common synonyms: Rhineriesling, Johannisberger, Gentile Aromatique, Hochheimer, Rizling, Rheinriesling, Rieslinger, Reynai, White Riesling

Parentage of the grape: likely indigenous to Germany

History of the grape: As with many varietals, exact details of Riesling’s origins are unclear. It is known that in 14th century Germany, attention shifted to white grape cultivation when it was obvious that red grapes weren’t up to snuff compared to those with more color and structure from neighboring countries. The first written mention of Riesling is dated March 13, 1435 when Count Katzenelnbogen at Russelsheim bought six vines of Riesling from Klaus Kleinfish for 22 soldi. From this point, there is written evidence throughout the 15th century of various sales and plantings around Germany as well as Austria and Alsace. The meticulous German artist Hieronymus Bosch makes a mention of it in his book on herbs, published in 1577, using the modern spelling Read more »

  • Another wine with German roots, but, actually, from above the 49th ... Turns ... Turns out it is a cross of Riesling and and Alsace grape called Knipperle.  I really get the Riesling part.  BIG fruit--nice, crisp apple and, maybe, some nectarine or apricot.  Seriously, if you blind tasted this with a bunch of Rieslings you could have a lot of ... • Tantalus Riesling 2018

    Snoothrank:

Everything is a matter of taste, right? Well, it is the same with Tantalus: the 2018 Riesling is the same clean, electric, mouth reveille of Granny Smith and citrus acidity on the palate. Perhaps slightly tamed. But still not exactly for the faint of heart, yet quite for the connoisseur. Will age nicely for at least 5-7 years, but perfect now ... Read More

  • We just can't easily get this stuff, @EMark.  But we may be down south ... by a modestly-price Trimbach Riesling (about 25 dollars US).  A very good wine, but perhaps not quite the 93 points WE calculated (perhaps closer to 90 Read More

  • Trimbach Riesling 2016

    Snoothrank:

Rated at 93 points by Wine Enthusiast, this seems a bit too enthusiastic an advertisement; muted, stewed white fruit and slight petrol bouquet, with more stewed, slightly spiced apple on entry. Very Alsatian and very good quality. 89. Read More
