USA Wine

"American Wine" has existed since the first Europeans brought their vinous heritage and traditions to these shores from the Old World. In that sense, Appellation America is over 400 years old. American wine has endured ecological, political and social hardships over the centuries, but it has evolved with each challenge.
Up to the late 1800s, the vine thrived in America, with the epicenter of winemaking in the Midwest along the banks of the Ohio River and shores of Lake Erie. At the turn of the last century phylloxera and Prohibition would together transform the viticultural landscape of America. In the 20th century, California would emerge as America’s dominate wine state (now producing 90% of the national total), but by the dawn of the 21st century winemaking would spread to every state in the union, with grapes grown in all but four. Across the 50 states exists the world's greatest diversity of climates, and virtually every species of vine can find a niche somewhere Read more »

Comment by 281773Moya Shatz 281773 Moya Shatz

  • Idaho is emerging as part of the new frontier for wine making, with 38 total wineries. From a geographical standpoint, the state has ideal growing conditions. Vinifera, or wine grapes, actually thrive in the distinctly four-season climate. Snake River Valley's lack of rainfall is also considered a plus, since potentially ruinous precipitation i...

  • Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel 2017

This is the first Bedrock Wine Co. Zinfandel I have tasted - much to my own personal loss. Many Zinfandel wines are spicy, hearty (even overly so, especially in alcohol) and full of semi-sweet black current and bramble berry. But the Bedrock is more than a notch upward: it has a nose of kirsch, cedar and grape preserve that yells out "Italy!"... Read More

  • Carlisle Zinfandel Pagani Ranch 2014

Very pleasant wine. Blackberry/blueberry on entry, but, then, I get something I don't recall ever experiencing in a Zin--only a suggestion, but that suggestion is orange. Very nice A "velvety" mouthfeel, which, again, I don't usually see in Zins. The orange clues you in to the fact that the acid level, here, is good. Sturdy tannin also sugg... Read More

  • Bedrock WIne Co. California Syrah 2018

I love the purple color of this one, A bit of "funk" on the nose, Lots of red berries on the tip of the tongue--unfortunately, a bit more syrupy than I like. Acid and tannin create a combination of spritziness and puckeriness around the edges of the tongue, An OK wine, and for $20 I'm happy to have this as an everyday drinker. Read More

  • Jolie-Laide Trousseau Gris Fanucchi Wood Road Vineyard 2018

Very pretty salmon color. "Fresh" nose--the nose predicts this will be a somewhat acidic wine. Sure enough, light fruit on the tongue--peach, kiwe and citrus. While the fruit flavors are subtle. there is no mistaking the citric acid--lemon or lime pith. Then there is the tingling on the tongue which, I am sure, is from the acid. A very refr... Read More

  • Chappellet Vineyard Merlot Napa Valley 2013

Lots of dark fruit on the nose. Blackberry on the tongue, but it is pretty subtle. Lots of dustiness under the rear palate--this might be from tannin. A fairly robust, mouth-filling Merlot. An unfortunate slight hint of sourness. This may be the result of less than primo storage. Still an very enjoyable wine. Read More

  • Kiona Vineyards Red Mountain Ava Lemberger 2017

The 2017 Lemberger from Kiona is spot on for the usual flavour profile and acidity, the difference being a denser, fruitier and slightly less bracing mouth feel. The wine is black - a result of the searing summer heat in the Yakima area no doubt, but one notices the lighter body and food-friendly acidity right away. Finish is short to medium, ... Read More

  • Another area that doesnt get enough credit is South West Colorado. They make some really good wines. I really suggest checking them out. There is actualy a long history of wineries in Colorado before prohibition, but most wineries ripped out the vines to replace them with fruit trees to make money.
